NMM exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM)

An exhibition of the National Maritime Museum's unrivalled collection of Dutch marine paintings was on show at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA until September 7, 2009. This marks the beginning of a USA tour of this beautiful collection of Dutch Masters.

US tour June 2009

Dr. Kevin Fewster, Director of the National Maritime Museum attended the preview of the Dutch art show at the Peabody Essex Museum on Wednesday 10 June and we were delighted to invite supporters of the American Fund of the NMM and our Patrons to join him.

It was a hectic week for Kevin with events also held in New York and Boston. Our warm thanks go to Lee MacCormick Edwards for hosting a supper party in NYC and to Susan Cabot for making the members evening at the Somerset Club, Boston on Tuesday 8 June possible and so very well attended. Seventy members of the Club came to hear Kevin's lecture on the NMM's world renowned collection of Dutch paintings, ahead of the opening at the PEM.

The NMM also wishes to thank Robert Moore II for his help in organising the informal Patrons reception at the New York Yacht Club and to the Directors of the American Fund of the National Maritime Museum for giving their time and energy so generously.

The Caird North American Fellowship 2009

Dr. Marina Carter, Honorary Research Fellow, University of Edinburgh, was awarded this year's NMM Caird North American Travelling Fellowship. This is designed to allow European-based scholars engaged on relevant research projects to conduct research at maritime archives in the NE United States.  Marina was based at the John Carter Brown Library from May until July 2009 where she studied manuscript and rare printed sources related to links between American merchants and the Isle of France (Mauritius), 1790-1808.

The research at the John Carter Brown Library will feed into a monograph on the subject, which Marina is intending to publish in 2010.
